I’m in! A photo a day challenge that actually seems kind of fun.[via thegirlkyle]
New year = new you! Sparkle and shine for a fete that’s finer then fine this New Year’s Eve. Expect jaws to drop (along with the ball) while you ring in 2012. Get inspired by over-the-top glitz and glam for a decadent DIY stunner. Re-purpose brooches in your jewelry box, or pick up a few at flea markets or on eBay.
To create, pin several brooches, arranged in a bib-like formation onto a piece of felt. Outline the bib shape with chalk and cut out around the brooches. You may need to sew a few stitches on the backside of the felt if brooches are weighing down the fabric, as you want them to lay flat. Flip over necklace base and sew a chain onto the back. Use a new chain or opt for one from an old necklace for an extra special touch.
P.S.- Here’s to a happy, healthy & crafty 2012!
I know this is categorically dorky but I can’t tell you how exciting it is when you have an interest in photography and get a new toy to play with. Over the years I’ve seen and done it all and these are 10 of my favorite fun photography gifts to date! Perhaps perfect for that someone who also…
It’s wine o’clock (somewhere) …
Which means it’s time to share a wine-related repurposing find. Today’s item: Wine corks arranged into the shape of a Christmas tree. (This tree’s made by 4EyesAndEars on Etsy.)
If you’ve missed some posts in our wine o’clock series, or want to look again at some earlier posts for inspiration to make something of your own, check out the Unconsumption archive here.
Recently, I visited my friend Lia and noticed her skin was particularly glowy and beautiful. Naturally, I asked her what did to get her skin to look so gorgeous. She told me she’d been washing her face with coconut oil for several months. Just coconut oil. I couldn’t believe it. Wash? With…

1. This Flameless Candle 3-Pack in Night Splendor ($36 from OpenSky) is awesome: the “candles” are set in beautiful (and big!) gold glass holders, flicker realistically with just a single battery each, and even feel and smell like the real thing.
2. For the orgasm-lover (hee), a full set of NARS’ classic products in the perfect peachy pink with flecks of gold: the Yorokobi Super Orgasm Set ($39) includes a blush, nail polish, and lip gloss.
3. A customizable gift that anyone would love: at Anthropologie, you can buy a chain necklace for about $18, and then customize it with the charms of your choosing – everything from initials to feathers to teeny-tiny hand mirrors.
4. I discovered MCMC perfume oil during an AOL shoot at Bird last summer, and have been obsessing over it ever since. The Noble fragrance ($45 for 9mL) contains notes of jasmine, vetiver and chai tea, and is one of the most sultry, unique scents I’ve ever come across.
5. Two necklaces that I’m obsessed with: chloe + isabel’s Spike Ball Pendant ($168) and Cosmic Thread’s Buoyant Form Necklace ($161).
6. The perfect pair of sunglasses makes the perfect gift, and these D&G cat-eyes ($150) would look great on anyone. Click here to browse Sunglass Hut’s Holiday Gift Guide (you can sort by “what she/he is into”).
7. Melinda Maria’s Gwyneth Marquise Earrings ($98) come in a bunch of different metal and gemstone colors, are a beautiful take on classic-with-a-twist, and are easy to dress up or down – perfect for the holidays.
8. I have a little porcelain bird-shaped jewelry dish sitting on my windowsill (a gift from my aunt), and it makes me happy every time I look at it. This one($19, from Pottery Barn) is just as sweet.
9. It doesn’t get much more adorable than this leopard fedora from Albertus Swanepoel for Target, and the price – just $19.99 – is adorable, too.
10. Borghese’s Fango Ristorativo ($33.50) mud mask for face and body isone of my favorites, and makes a great stocking stuffer or gift for a skincare-obsessed friend.
11. Old-school planners make beautiful, timeless gifts, and while there are lots of options out there, my very favorite is this black leather version from Christian Lacroix ($135).
12. Everyone needs a medium-to-large sized pot with a lid that moves seamlessly from stovetop to oven, and psst! There are lots and lots of majorly discounted, candy-colored ones at HomeGoods – on my last trip I even spotted that Cuisinart pictured above. In lime green. Growl.
13. These studded Portolano driving gloves ($75) are just sexy. And on sale.
14. A super-sweet monogram mug from Anthropologie ($8) makes a perfect (and perfectly affordable) gift for everyone on your list.
15. Open up this Crabtree & Evelyn Hand Therapy Sampler ($35) yourself and use the contents to stuff a whole bunch of stockings, or give the entire set to one lucky (and soon-to-be-well-moisturized) recipient.
Just print this out and refer to it whenever you are the head of a massively powerful institution that is maybe looking the other way while people get raped.
Or, you know, whenever you are ANYONE. Just sayin’.
Please let this happen!

Meshell Ndegeocello’s versatility as an artist has made her one of music’s least predictable stars: She’s been a sultry soul singer, a pop-rock hitmaker, a house diva and a space-jazz explorer, not to mention a bassist for The Rolling Stones and Madonna. As a performer and a songwriter, Ndegeocello is a true seeker, always in pursuit of a surprise. Her new album, Weather, is out next week.
